Surface Preparation on Malaysian Offshore Platforms: No Blast Pot, No Shutdown

ATEX 2014/34/EU-evaluated pneumatic Bristle Blaster® tools (Zone 1 gas, Zone 21 dust) let crews prepare steel to a grade comparable to ISO 8501-1 Sa2 ½ & Sa3 on live platforms — no blast pot, no shutdown, no electrical parts in the zone.
The short answer: ATEX-evaluated pneumatic Bristle Blaster® tools let crews prepare steel to a grade comparable to ISO 8501-1 Sa2 ½ & Sa3 on live Malaysian platforms — no blast pot, no containment, no shutdown, and no electrical components in the classified zone.
The offshore surface-prep problem
On a producing platform, abrasive blasting is rarely an option: containment, media logistics by boat, permits for a blast spread in a live plant, and the risk grit poses to rotating equipment. The result is deferred maintenance — and coating failure on its own schedule.
What the ATEX evaluation actually covers
The pneumatic Bristle Blaster® has undergone an independent ignition-hazard analysis and ATEX 2014/34/EU conformity evaluation as Category 2 equipment: Zone 1 explosive gas (group IIA, EPL Gb) and Zone 21 explosive dust (IIIC, EPL Db), assessed to EN ISO 80079-36, EN ISO 80079-37 and IEC 60079-0. Fully pneumatic, no electrical parts. Confirm the certified marking on the tool plate before entering a classified zone — and keep the GEXCON documentation in the permit pack.
What a scope looks like without the blast spread
One operator, an air line or an 18V battery platform, and belts. Field-joint and corroded-weld preparation, spot repairs, and in-service prep proceed while the facility operates. In a 2023 UK gas-network field trial, a comparable scope took 45 person-minutes with Bristle Blasting against 260 with grit blasting — a 5.8x crew-time reduction, before counting mobilisation.
East Malaysia included
Tools and belts ship from Shah Alam nationwide — including Sabah and Sarawak supply bases. For subsea scopes, the hydraulic Bristle Blaster® Subsea extends the same preparation below the waterline.
