MBX and Bristle Blaster Model Guide: Electric, Cordless or Pneumatic (and What MBX 3200 Is)

Electric, cordless and pneumatic MontiPower® tools produce comparable results on steel: the same belts and the same accelerator bar mechanism, though head speeds differ (electric around 3,200 rpm, pneumatic 3,500 rpm, cordless 2,300 rpm). What really differs is how well each one suits your working conditions. Choose the wrong one and the tool will still do the job — your productivity will not.

First: MBX® or Bristle Blaster®?

These are two related lines, and mixing up their consumables is the most common ordering error.

They are not interchangeable. If you need a specified profile for a coating system, you need Bristle Blaster® belts on a tool with the accelerator bar fitted.

What is “MBX 3200”?

We receive a steady stream of enquiries quoting MBX 3200 (also written 3200A or 3200X). It is the model designation of an earlier electric MBX Bristle Blaster kit, and the number is simply the no-load speed: 3,200 rpm. The pneumatic sibling was designated 3500X, at 3,500 rpm. Plenty of these units are still in service and still listed on asset registers.

If you have one:

  • Order consumables by hub width, not by machine model. Quote the width of the hub currently fitted (11 mm or 23 mm) — it is far more reliable than the model number.
  • Check whether the accelerator bar is fitted and serviceable. A worn accelerator bar quietly degrades the profile long before anyone notices.
  • Consider the upgrade path. Current tools are the Bristle Blaster® Ultimate range (electric, electric double and cordless), the Bristle Blaster® Pneumatic, and the MBX® range. If a repair bill is approaching half the price of a replacement, evaluate a new tool instead.

Four practical calls

Tank interiors, scaffolding, work at height → cordless. Cables and hoses are both a trip hazard and a drag on the operator's wrist, which shows up as inconsistent profile. Issue two or three batteries per operator so charging never sits on the critical path.

Workshop and fixed stations → electric. Cheapest to run where power is available; no battery degradation, no compressor to maintain for one tool.

Refinery or shipyard with an air ring main → pneumatic. Confirm the tool's air consumption and working pressure against what the point of use can actually deliver. Inadequate air volume is the most common reason a pneumatic tool underperforms.

Hazardous area → start with the risk assessment, not the power source. The pneumatic variant's ATEX declaration (EN 1127-1, EN ISO 80079-36/-37) removes electrical ignition sources from the tool, and ignition-hazard testing has been carried out on the MBX Bristle Blaster in explosive atmospheres by GexCon (report GexCon-09-44124-RA1 rev01). Neither replaces your area classification, hot work permit and risk assessment.

Belts: width and material

  • 11 mm — welds, bevels, corners, around bolts, narrow recesses.
  • 23 mm — the general-purpose width for most repair work.
  • Carbon steel — for carbon steel components.
  • Stainless steel — mandatory on stainless steel and aluminium. Using carbon steel bristles on stainless causes free iron contamination, which shows up later as rust staining and, in the worst case, pitting.

Changing width means changing the hub and accelerator bar assembly, not just the belt. If your crews work both narrow details and larger areas, carry a set for each width. For higher coverage rates, the answer is a double-wheel tool rather than a wider belt.

Housekeeping that pays for itself: store carbon and stainless consumables separately, colour-code them, and dedicate hub assemblies by material.

Budgeting: look past the tool price

  1. Tool, hub and accelerator bar — one-off.
  2. Belts — the main variable cost. Distributors quote typical working life of around 25 minutes per belt under standard conditions.
  3. Wear parts — accelerator bars, hubs, and battery ageing on cordless tools.

Establish your own figure: prepare 1 m² on a representative component, record the time and the belts consumed, and convert to belts per m². That number is what you compare against a blasting scope, not the list price.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cordless tool produce the same finish as the electric one?

With a charged battery and correct technique the results are close, though not identical: the cordless tool runs at a lower head speed (around 2,300 rpm against roughly 3,200 rpm electric), so verify the profile you actually achieve on a trial panel. In practice, operator technique and belt wear move the result far more than the power source does.

When should a belt be replaced?

When the tips lose their forward bend and shorten, when the finished surface starts to look bright and polished rather than a uniform matt of micro-indentations, when measured profile drops out of specification, or at any sign of physical damage.

Can I still get spares for an MBX 3200?

Send the rating plate and hub width and we will check current spares and consumables against it, and advise on replacement if that is the better commercial answer.
